Dili, February 10, 2025 – Members of the National Parliament have expressed their concerns about the electricity shortages that have been taking place in the capital Dili, and in other areas.

MP Cedelizia Faria dos Santos stressed that the electricity failure is very prejudicial, and that Commission C of the National Parliament   will be monitoring the Ministry of Finance, especially the public services of the Ministry of Finance.   According to the MP, many electronic systems need electricity to function, but with this failure the work of the Ministry of Finance is facing difficulties. “The power failure never ends, it affects the work of the ministry,” Cedelizia said at the PN plenary session.

The CNRT MP also asked to the government to find an emergency solution immediately and also asked the government to pay attention to this issue. If the President of Electricity of Timor-Leste (EDTL) doesn’t have the capacity, he should resign.

On the other hand, the people’s representative in the National Parliament (PN) said that the same thing happened in Comoro, saying that the problem of power failure is very prejudicial for the community, especially those who depend on electricity for their daily needs, because power outages damage all their electronic equipment.

On another occasion, MP Óscar Lima also highlighted the same situation in the municipality of Ermera, where the electricity was cut off for four consecutive days.   He asked the government, especially EDTL, to find a solution to this problem immediately. “We put someone in charge of electricity, we need a qualified person, if we don’t have staff, we can hire foreign people to manage it, because we lose a lot of money on electricity.

The people who continue to be affected are waiting for the problem of the power failure to be resolved. According to them, many electronic devices have been damaged and work has been disrupted. Another member of the National Parliament, Anacleto Freitas, also pointed out that in some areas, such as the Administrative Post of Uatulari, the electricity failed more than three months ago. The government or the relevant parties are expected to immediately assess the causes of this problem.

In an increasingly urgent situation, the MPs called on the government to take swift and decisive action, as well as to develop long-term measures to guarantee a stable electricity supply throughout the region, especially in public service centers and communities. #End#
